The Northwest Bolsena Archaeological Project (NWBAP), located near Gradoli in central Italy, invites participants to excavate the Valle Gianni site, offering a rare opportunity to explore a variety of significant features, including the remains of a monumental fountain—possibly a nymphaeum, evidence of a medium-scale wine production facility, and the foundations of a potential villa. Valle Gianni’s rich stratigraphy provides unique insights into the material culture and daily life of the ancient Etruscan and Roman periods, shedding light on the region’s evolving history.
Participants gain hands-on experience in excavation techniques, artifact cataloging, and archaeological survey under the guidance of professional archaeologists. The fieldwork is complemented by weekly lectures on topics such as Roman architecture, ancient water systems, and viticulture, with opportunities to visit nearby archaeological sites and museums. This immersive experience equips participants with essential field skills and deepens their understanding of the ancient Mediterranean world.
As I come to my last semester as an undergraduate, the time I've spent at Valle Gianni is undoubtedly one of the most important academic and life experiences I've had to date, and it wouldn't be possible without the generous support of The Etruscan Foundation.
